The scent of pine trees filled the air as visitors came to see our first Christmas Tree Festival at St Paul’s and “Wow !” was the sound most frequently heard throughout the weekend. The church was filled with Christmas trees, twenty-nine in total, all beautifully decorated on different themes ranging from ‘Angels’ to ‘Derby County’.
The festival started on the Friday morning with a tree-themed service for the Curzon School, during which the pupils enjoyed the switching on of the lights. Refreshments w ere served throughout the weekend and on the Saturday there were various musical items in church, finishing with a concert by the Alfreton Male Voice Choir, which was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. The festival ended with the popular carol service on Sunday evening.
The weekend was a great success as a community event, with trees being sponsored and decorated by many local groups and businesses and people coming from near and far to visit. It was also a very successful fund-raiser, with almost £900 being raised for Derby City Mission. A fantastic result!
