The partnership between churches in Derbyshire and the Church of North India (CNI) was established in 1977. During the early 1980s, it was considered that the Greater Allestree Group of Churches might become more involved in the venture, and following visits to and from Nagpur the link with the Social Services Institute (SSI) was formed. The SSI works extensively with the poor and marginalised in the region and is currently headed up by the Revd Paranjyothy Sedala, who has visited us on two occasions.
The Nagpur Link Committee currently includes representatives from 9 local churches, including St Paul’s. It meets to facilitate exchange of news and information about the SSI and organisation of fund-raising events such as the Lent Lunches and Curry Evening. In addition meetings provide an opportunity for prayer support and for organising the occasional exchange visits; individuals from Allestree have been to Nagpur and those from the SSI have travelled to Derby to cement the link and to allow first hand exchange of information, whilst the visitors experience a programme of events and activities planned for their information and enjoyment.
